Road infrastructure
The capital has well-developed road infrastructure and well-organized streets but due to the constant urbanization of the city, it proves to be extremely insufficient and utterly obsolete. Repairs of the street covering are frequently needed and this poses a lot of difficulties to the traffic on the thoroughfares of the city and leads to even heavier traffic jams. Taking into consideration the future projects and mainly the forthcoming completion of the Sofia underground - “Metro”, which is expected to substantially alleviate the traffic environment in the city, the Chief Architect Petar Dikov and the Sofia mayor foresee that the reconstruction of the road infrastructure will continue in the next eight years.
The parking areas that were once planned prove to be utterly insufficient in view of the progressively increasing number of automobiles in the capital. The most severe difficulties are observed mainly in the central part of the city.
Lyulin highway, which will connect the Ring Road in Sofia with the road Daskalovo in Pernik and subsequently link with “Struma” highway, is currently under construction. The further development of the underground network also continues, as well as the expansion of the Ring Road.
