The technical infrastructure of Sofia was developed decades ago but due to the continuous urbanization of the city, it turns out to be highly insufficient and highly obsolete. The gravest problems are related with the sewerage system. Certain parts of it are being repaired but this is just partial improvement. Unfortunately, the street drains are clogged and heavier rains often flood streets, subways, etc.

The gasification of Sofia started in 2003. The districts without central heating were the first to be gasified. The gasification of the whole city was launched afterwards on a stage-by-stage basis and the process still continues.
