All types of transport (excluding water transport) are represented in Sofia. Buses, trains, trolleys and trams in the city are quite obsolete but the process of replacement of the vehicles has already started. The private passenger vans (marshtoutki) serving fixed routes have turned into an efficient and comfortable means of transportation.

The largest airport in Bulgaria – “Sofia Airport” is located close to the city. A second terminal was opened in 2006 and it now provides better services to a higher number of passengers.

The only underground line on the territory of Bulgaria operates in Sofia. 3 new lines have also been planned. Part of the first line is ready and the deadline set by the municipality for the remaining distance of it is 2009. According to them, the whole underground network of Sofia should be operational by 2015.
